A man from Torquay has been jailed for 15 years after admitting to selling large quantities of illegal drugs online, as police seize over £1.3 million in cryptocurrency linked to his operation.
Ryan Coleman, 36, was sentenced at Exeter Crown Court after pleading guilty to supplying Class A and B drugs, including cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine, and cannabis.
According to Devon and Cornwall Police, Coleman had conducted around 18,500 illegal drug transactions, distributing approximately 80 kilograms of narcotics with an estimated street value exceeding £1.3 million.
Operated Under Pseudonym “Snowcap”
Coleman operated under the alias “Snowcap” on the dark web, using multiple online drug marketplaces to facilitate his trade. Police say he had been active for six years, accepting cryptocurrency payments to fund his lifestyle, which included luxury holidays, personal training, and sports activities.
The investigation into Coleman’s activities began in 2021, during a separate drugs inquiry in South Devon. Suspicions around his involvement in cryptocurrency movement and laundering led to the launch of Operation Freebie, a targeted investigation focused on disrupting his network.
Advanced Crime-Fighting Techniques
Detective Chief Inspector Sam Smoothy, the senior investigating officer, highlighted the evolving nature of criminal activity and the need for modern policing methods.
“This case demonstrates how organised crime groups are increasingly turning to cryptocurrency and the dark web to carry out illegal drug trades,” he said. “We are continually developing our capabilities to detect, trace, and dismantle these sophisticated operations.”
£2.4 Million in Bitcoin Uncovered
During the investigation, authorities discovered Bitcoin wallets containing more than £2.4 million. While £1.3 million has already been seized, efforts are ongoing under the Proceeds of Crime Act to confiscate additional funds.
Police explained that recovered assets could be reinvested into proactive policing operations and community initiatives. Half of the total funds will be directed to HM Treasury to support public services.
Understanding Cryptocurrency’s Role
Cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, are digital-only currencies that allow users to transfer funds anonymously without the involvement of banks or governments. While they can be used to purchase legitimate goods and services, they are also increasingly being exploited in illegal activities due to the difficulty in tracking transactions.
