North Korea’s leader showcases new weapons with his teenage daughter at his side.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been photographed testing a newly developed pistol during an inspection of a light munitions factory with his teenage daughter Kim Ju-ae appearing beside him and even taking part in the shooting demonstration.
The images, released by North Korean state media, show both father and daughter firing the handgun during the visit, highlighting Pyongyang’s push to modernize its conventional weapons production.
A Weapons Factory Visit
According to reports from state media, Kim toured the factory responsible for producing pistols and other light arms used by the military and security forces. During the inspection, he evaluated a new-type handgun that had recently entered production and later tested it at a shooting range.
After firing the weapon, Kim reportedly described the pistol as “excellent,” while also urging officials to expand production capacity and modernize manufacturing processes.
The visit was part of a broader effort by Pyongyang to strengthen its conventional military capabilities alongside its nuclear program.
Daughter Appears in Shooting Drill
One of the most striking aspects of the visit was the presence of Kim’s daughter.
Photos released by state media show Kim Ju-ae, believed to be around 13 years old, standing alongside senior military officials and firing the pistol herself during the demonstration.
Although official reports did not highlight her participation in the written text, the photographs clearly show her actively involved in the exercise.
Her appearance is significant because she has increasingly accompanied her father at high-profile events, including missile tests, military inspections and state ceremonies.
Growing Speculation About Succession
Since first appearing publicly during a ballistic missile test in 2022, Kim Ju-ae’s growing visibility has sparked speculation among analysts that she may be preparing for a future leadership role.
South Korea’s National Intelligence Service has previously indicated there are signs she may already be participating in internal political discussions suggesting she could be in the early stages of being positioned as a successor.
If that interpretation proves correct, it would mark a historic shift for North Korea, which has traditionally been led by male members of the Kim family dynasty.
A Carefully Crafted Image
Experts say the images serve multiple purposes.
On one level, they highlight North Korea’s efforts to strengthen its weapons production and military readiness. On another, they reinforce the image of dynastic continuity presenting Kim’s daughter as a confident figure standing beside the country’s leader.
For Pyongyang, symbolism matters.
By showing Ju-ae participating in military activities and appearing alongside top officials, the regime may be preparing both domestic elites and the wider population for the possibility of a future transition of power.
The Message to the World
The timing of the photos also sends a signal internationally.
North Korea has recently stepped up weapons demonstrations, including missile tests and military inspections, as tensions remain high on the Korean Peninsula.
By pairing those displays with the rising profile of Kim’s daughter, the regime appears to be doing two things at once: projecting military strength and quietly reinforcing the continuity of its ruling dynasty.
For now, Ju-ae’s official political role remains unclear.
But with every appearance beside her father especially at sensitive military events the speculation about North Korea’s next leader continues to grow.
