Search launched overnight after crew reported man overboard
A man’s body has been recovered from the water at Hobart’s waterfront after he was reported missing from a vessel docked at Sullivans Cove early Tuesday morning.
Emergency services were alerted around 3:55am after crewmates reported that the man, believed to be in his early 20s, had apparently fallen overboard from the vessel during the night.
Police and rescue crews immediately began searching the area, deploying divers near Castray Esplanade as daylight approached.
After several hours of searching, the man’s body was located in the water shortly before 7:45am, nearly four hours after he was first reported missing.
Investigation Underway
Tasmania Police have confirmed they are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not yet released the man’s identity or details about the vessel involved while next of kin are notified.
Inspector John Toohey is expected to provide further updates as investigators continue examining what led to the man entering the water.
At this stage, officials say the exact circumstances remain unclear, and inquiries are ongoing.
Hobart Waterfront Response
The Hobart waterfront area, a busy maritime and tourism hub along the River Derwent, saw a heavy emergency response during the early-morning search.
Police and specialist divers worked the waters near the wharves as crews searched the river for any sign of the missing man.
Such incidents are relatively rare but can prompt extensive rescue operations due to the challenges of searching open water and harbour areas.
Community Impact
The tragedy has drawn attention to safety risks around busy port areas, especially during nighttime operations where visibility and conditions can complicate emergency responses.
Authorities are continuing to gather information from crew members and witnesses to understand how the incident unfolded.
For now, police say their focus remains on determining exactly how the man went overboard and whether any additional factors contributed to the fatal incident.
As the investigation continues, further updates are expected later today as authorities piece together the timeline of events that led to the early-morning discovery on Hobart’s waterfront.
