HMRC cracks down on UK crypto gains as data sharing grows rapidly
Summary:There’s no longer a tap on the door at HMRC, it’s coming through your walls like a waterfall. Crypto’s not a secret club of finance where you don’t pay your taxes. The message could not be clearer If you have gains, the government wants some of them.
They’re not guessing anymore, either, HMRC can now track your trades “thanks to new datas haring rules”, and see what hasn’t been declared. Some 65,000 letters went out in 2024–25 roughly double the total from last year. That’s not admin, that’s a full blown campaign.
But there is no need for this to seem like a crackdown. Think of it more as the shove it might take to get your house in order. Get your paperwork in order, be transparent and you won’t have to worry about that knock turning into something louder down the road.
